Sumter County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It and its county seat of Sumter are named for Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter.[1] The 2010 census recorded its population to be 107,456. In July 1, 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that its population had reached 107,570.[2] It is included in the Sumter Metropolitan Statistical Area.
It is the home of Shaw AFB, part of the 20th Fighter Wing & Headquarters to the 9th Air Force and the Third Army as of August 2011.

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 114,646 people, 147,728 households, and 27,616 families residing in the county. The population density was 257 people per square mile (61/km²). There were 71,751 housing units at an average density of 63 per square mile (24/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 39.6% White, 37.5% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 11.02% Asian, 10.01% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 2.83% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 71,751 households out of which 36.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.20% were married couples living together, 18.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.80% were non-families. 23.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2 and the average family size was 4.
In the county, the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $44,167, and the median income for a family was $48,970. Males had a median income of $41,083 versus $37,162 for females. The per capita income for the county was $45,657. About 13.10% of families and 16.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.60% of those under age 18 and 16.40% of those age 65 or over.
